KGM SsangYong Online Store — configure a car, price it, pay in one flow

Buyers pick a SsangYong model, configure it by trim and color, watch the price form from that choice and pay without leaving the flow. The configurator and the checkout are two steps of one flow.

The context

Buying a car does not start at a checkout button. It starts with a specification, this trim and that color, and the price only exists once those choices have been made. KGM SsangYong wanted that step to happen online, before anyone walks into a dealership. That is where the build gets interesting, because cart software is written on the opposite assumption. Here the configuration is the line item.

How we work on every project

Planning

We go through how the work runs today and what you expect from the software; the scope comes out of that.

Architecture

We decide what the system is made of and where its information is kept.

Modelling

We draw the screens and the flow before any code, and start building once you have approved them.

Development

We write and hand over the software so another team could carry it on.

What we built

  • Vehicle configurator

A buyer picks a model, then works through trim and color; each choice updates the price and the vehicle shown on screen together.

  • Configuration-driven pricing

Price comes out of the trim-and-color combination, and the sales terms attached to that combination travel with it into checkout.

  • Checkout in the same flow

Payment opens as the next step of the configurator, carrying the buyer's specification forward so nothing has to be selected twice.

  • Shared stack with the corporate site

The store runs on the same Laravel, MySQL and Redis set as the brand's main site, so both sit in one maintenance skill set.

How we built it

  • Tailwind

Challenge and result

Each row is a pair: the challenge the work had to solve on the left, and how the system answers it on the right.
Challenge Result
Every trim-and-color combination carries its own price, its own imagery and its own sales terms Each combination is stored with its own price, imagery and sales terms
Off-the-shelf cart software prices a single catalog row and stops at that The price comes out of the specification a buyer built, not out of a catalog row
Change a trim and both the price and the vehicle image have to follow immediately Change one choice and the price and the car on screen move with it
Any gap between configuring and paying sends the buyer back to the first step The specification carries into checkout, so nothing is entered a second time
